Score football cards began life as trendsetters in 1989 (or maybe 1988!), busting the monopoly Topps had held in the gridiron market for decades.

Indeed, those early sets helped to turn the hobby’s thinking around completely when it came to football cards. All through the boom of the 1980s, other sports had lagged behind baseball in popularity, but there were plenty of football and basketball collectors waiting in the wings.

Then … Pro Set and Score both showed up on the scene in one fell swoop, there we were awash in football cards. Pro Set flooded the market, though, leaving the more limited inaugural Score issue as a standard-bearer among 1989 cards today.

And, while Score has had its ups and downs over the years, they’ve never been far from the hobby spotlight, even when they weren’t actually producing cards … for the moment.
