Mickey Mantle earned a total of about $1.1 million during his major league career from 1951 through 1968, with top earnings of $100,000 per year in each of 1963 through 1968.
Those are meager numbers by today’s standard’s, to be sure, and even those come with caveats, as Baseball Reference notes that there is some disagreement on Mantle’s salary data among different sources.
B-R does also note, though, that the list of salaries on their site may not be complete and also may not include all bonuses Mantle earned during his career.
Still, no matter how you look at it, the numbers seem paltry.
By way of comparison, for example, the most similar batter to The Mick (again, according to Baseball Reference) who played his entire career after Mantle retired was Mike Schmidt.
And, even though Schmitty retired more than 30 years ago, his career earnings totaled more than $17 million — about 17 times Mantle’s sum!
Suffice it to say, were Mantle playing today, he’d have the chance to set all sorts of salary records (as would Willie Mays, Hank Aaron, and maybe a few others).
