The St. Louis Cardinals won the 1982 World Series in a thrilling 7-game matchup with the Milwaukee Brewers.

That season, the Brewers won their first division title ever, prevailing over the Baltimore Orioles with a win against future Hall of Famer Jim Palmer on the last day of the season to take the American League East flag.

The Cardinals, meanwhile, held first place in the National League East for most of the season, winning the title by three games over the Philadelphia Phillies.

In the National League Championship Series, the Cards swept the N.L. West-winning Atlanta Braves in three games.

The Brewers, meanwhile, faced off against the California Angels in the American League Championship Series, dropping the first two games in Anaheim before coming home to win three in a row and reach their first World Series ever.

In the World Series, the two teams seesawed for six games, with the Brewers taking Game 1, and then each team taking two in a row (Cards in Games 2 and 3, Brewers in Games 4 and 5). With the Brewers up 3 games to 2, though, the Cards routed visiting Milwaukee at Busch Stadium in Game 6, by a score of 13-1.

In Game 7, also played in St. Louis, the Brewers took a 3-1 lead into the bottom of the sixth inning, but the Cardinals erupted for three runs in the bottom of the frame.

The Cards would add another run in the eighth when Darrell Porter singled to drive in Lonnie Smith. One batter later, Steve Braun singled to bring Keith Hernandez home, to bring the score to its final tally: 6-3.

Cardinals reliever Bruce Sutter, another Hall of Famer, set the Brewers down in order in the top of the ninth inning, and the Cardinals had their ninth World Series victory (they’ve since added two more, in 2006 and 2011).

Porter was named Series MVP for his timely hitting that included five RBI, and for catching all seven games. He was also the MVP of the NLCS.
