The New York Mets have won two World Series, in 1969 and in 1986.

In addition to those championships, the Mets have played in three other Fall Classics, all losses: 1973, 2000, and 2015.

Here is a rundown of each of those Mets teams and the World Series they appeared in.

1969 World Series – New York Mets over Baltimore Orioles (4 games to 1)

After a woeful beginning to their history as an expansion team in 1962, the Mets shocked the world in 1969 to win the first-ever National League East division crown. Led by manager Gil Hodges, budding stars like Tommie Agee, and a young pitching staff that included Tom Seaver, Jerry Koosman, and Nolan Ryan, the Mets then took down the Atlanta Braves in the first National League Championship Series, three games to none.

That set up a matchup against the heavily favored Baltimore Orioles, but the Amazin’ Mets kept their amazing streak going, downing the O’s in five games to take their first ever championship.

1973 World Series – Oakland A’s over New York Mets (4 games to 3)

Despite putting up a pedestrian 82-79 record in the regular season, the Mets again took the NL East in 1973 before beating the Cincinnati Reds in a tough five-game NLCS. Then they took the defending World Series champions, the Oakland A’s, the full seven games before losing the final game of the Fall Classic by a 5-2 margin.

1986 World Series – New York Mets over Boston Red Sox (4 games to 3)

The Mets were clearly the best team in the game in 1986, fashioning a sterling 108-54 record thanks to superstar seasons from Dwight Gooden, Darryl Strawberry, Gary Carter, Keith Hernandez, and a constellation of other big names. They took care of the Houston Astros, four games to two, in the NLCS, before matching up with the Boston Red Sox in a thrilling seven-game World Series. The famous error by Bill Buckner in Game 6 gave the Mets new life when it looked like their season was over, and they won Game 7 handily, 8-5, to capture their second title.

2000 World Series – New York Yankees over New York Mets (4 games to 1)

The 2000 Mets didn’t win their division, but thanks to the Wild Card, they made the playoffs. There, they beat the San Francisco Giants (3-1) in the NL Division Series and the St. Louis Cardinals (4-1) in the NLCS to set up the first Subway Series since 1956. Alas, the 2000 affair felt like old times — the New York Yankees handled their crosstown rivals, four games to one, to win their third straight World Series.

2015 World Series – Kansas City Royals over New York Mets (4 games to 1)

After a 90-72 regular season netted them a division title, the 2015 Mets won their NLDS matchup with the Los Angeles Dodgers, three games to two. The Mets then swept the Chicago Cubs in the NLCS in four games before falling to the Kansas City Royals in the World Series, four games to one.

Other Postseason Appearances

In addition to those five World Series appearances, the Mets have landed postseason berths on four other occasions.

In 1988, they won the NL East division crown before falling to the Dodgers in the NLCS, four games to three.

In 1999, the Mets finished second in the East but made the playoffs as a Wild Card. There, they defeated the Arizona Diamondbacks (3-1) in the NLDS before falling to the division rival Atlanta Braves (4-1) in the NLCS.

In 2006, New York won the NL East and then swept the Dodger (3-0) in the NLDS before falling to the Cardinals in the NLCS (4-3).

In 2016, the Mets again made the playoffs as a Wild Card but dropped a one-game play-in to the San Francisco Giants.
