Vladimir Guerrero Jr. rookie cards stand at the forefront of a baseball and hobby trend that shows no signs of slowing down — namely, an influx of young talent that comes with a hearty, built-in serving of name recognition.
How’s that? Well, it’s all in the pedigree, of course!
In Guerrero’s case, as with Biggio, that legacy includes a Hall of Fame plaque for Vladimir Guerrero Sr.
And, even among such a gaudy litany of baseball names, Guerrero stands out as maybe the best of the bunch, at least at the plate, with many predicting a father-son reunion in Cooperstown someday far, far down the line.
Through his first three years in the big leagues, Guerrero’s performance on the field did little to dissuade those lofty ideas, as evidenced by a batting line that include a cumulative .289 batting average, 72 home runs, 213 RBI, 209 runs scored, an .884 OPS, and 137 OPS+.
All of that was good for nearly 10 WAR (Baseball Reference version).
His 2021 season, in particular, at just 22 years of age had fans and collectors salivating in anticipation of what would come next: .311, 48 HR, 111 RBI, 123 runs scored, 1.002 OPS, 169 OPS+.
The homers and runs led the majors, while the OPS and OPS+ figures led the American League.
It was all good enough for 6.8 WAR and a second-place finish in A.L. MVP voting, behind the amazing Shohei Ohtani.
Not surprisingly, collectors took to Guerrero right away, gobbling up the various international and prospect cards that began appearing on the market shortly after he signed with the Blue Jays in July of 2015.
Of course, the first “official” Guerrero rookie cards had to wait until he made his major league debut in late April of 2019, but we were awash in RCs from Topps, Bowman, Panini, and Donruss by the end of the year.
As with his pre-rookies, the hobby basked in the avalanche of El K’s rookies.
And, while Guerrero has a long, long way to go before he enters the conversation as best “Junior” ever alongside Ken Griffey Jr., his cards draw plenty of interest every day of the week, and twice on Sunday.
