Mickey Mantle died on August 13, 1995, after a battle with liver cancer.

Mantle was first diagnosed with liver cancer — as well as cirrhosis and hepatitis C — early in 1995. He received a liver transplant at the Baylor University Medical Center in June.

By July, he was well enough to hold a press conference, where he told his admirers, “Don’t be like me.”

His advice was in reference to his well-documented and even celebrated carousing and alcoholism that had likely helped shorten his playing career and that undoubtedly led to his liver ailments.

Later in the month, he became very ill and had to return to the hospital, where doctors discovered that his liver cancer had spread throughout his body, despite the transplant.

Mantle was 63 years old when he died.
